 Tomb Raider: Underworld Introduction:

Tomb Raider: Underworld is an action-adventure video game created by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos Interactive in November 2008. It was initially released for Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS, with later versions for mobile platforms in December 2008, PlayStation 2 in 2009, and OS X in 2012. Different companies were involved in porting and developing these various versions. This game is the ninth installment in the Tomb Raider series and the third part of the Legend trilogy.

In Tomb Raider: Underworld, players follow the archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft as she embarks on a quest to find Mjolnir, a vital artifact for accessing the realm of Helheim. Along the way, she confronts adversaries from her past. Gameplay involves Lara navigating diverse locations across the world, engaging in platforming, combat with enemies, and solving puzzles to advance.

Gameplay:

Development for Underworld began in 2006 after the release of Tomb Raider: Legend and ran concurrently with the development of Anniversary in 2007. The game's scenario was co-written by director Eric Lindstrom and series co-creator Toby Gard, although Gard left Crystal Dynamics the following year. The gameplay was overhauled, focusing on Lara's abilities, and motion capture was used for her actions for the first time. A new game engine was also developed for the project, although the team faced challenges transitioning to next-generation hardware and staff shortages due to the production of Anniversary.

Initially announced in January 2008 for next-generation hardware, the game's release was delayed to November and also announced for current-generation hardware. Exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox 360 was released in 2009. The game received mostly positive reviews from critics, with praise for its environments, story, puzzles, exploration, graphics, and its less linear gameplay. However, criticism was directed at its camera and combat system. While it initially sold below expectations, it eventually surpassed three million copies in worldwide sales. It marked the final Tomb Raider game published by Eidos Interactive before their acquisition and rebranding by Square Enix. Following Underworld, Crystal Dynamics rebooted the series again, with the next game releasing in 2013.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is a single-player action-adventure game where players assume the role of Lara Croft in a third-person perspective. Players can guide Lara through various global locations, enabling her to perform actions such as jumping, climbing, crawling, swinging on ropes, swimming, and diving. Lara can also interact with objects, use a grappling hook, and perform different moves like rolling and swan diving. Puzzles in the game revolve around finding keys, manipulating mechanisms, and avoiding traps.

In combat situations, Lara automatically targets enemies with her equipped gun, allowing players to switch between targets and evade enemy attacks. Lara has access to seven weapons throughout the game, each with limited ammunition, along with the powerful magical artifact Mjolnir in the final levels. Lara's health is represented visually, with medipacks and collectible artifacts healing her and raising her health cap. The game offers customizable difficulty settings for puzzles, combat, and platforming challenges. Players can also receive navigation and puzzle-solving tips through Lara's PDA and access a sonar map showing a 3D representation of her surroundings.

Final Words:

While the PlayStation 2 and Wii versions are similar to other platforms, they have smaller environments and simplified puzzles due to hardware limitations. The Wii version incorporates motion controls for combat and puzzles. The Nintendo DS version is a 2D side-scrolling platformer with Lara progressing through self-contained areas. There are also two mobile versions with differing gameplay styles, one being a 2D side-scrolling platformer, and the other featuring 3D graphics with platforming and combat elements, although Lara's movement is limited to forward and backward with some automatic actions triggered by button prompts.
